In Gibraltar the Conservatives secured 8297 votes, representing 70% of votes
cast, compared to 31% in the region as a whole.
Voter turnout was higher with 58% participating compared to 38% overall.
Considering that the party had only previously been associated with negative policies, like the Brussels and Airport Agreements, the effective landslide
can be interpreted as a massive protest against the 'shared sovereignty'
concept of the Labour Government and, of course, the efforts by the
Gibraltar Conservatives.
Breakdown of The Gibraltar Vote by parties represented in
The SW Region.
The electoral system, introduced by the Labour Government, is a
party list system with large regional constituencies. Electors
therefore vote for a party rather than an individual candidate.
Conservatives are committed to promoting and defending British
interests in Europe, defending the Conservative vision of the
European Union as a partnership of nation states.
Thanks to the initiative of the SDGG in taking legal action
in the European Court of Human Rights, Gibraltar will be
participating in these elections for the first time.
Extract from the Conservative Manifesto
In April 2001 the Government started secret
negotiations with Spain to share sovereignty over
Gibraltar, despite the fact that the people of
Gibraltar are fiercely loyal to the Crown and have
made it absolutely clear that they want to remain
British.
In November 2002 the people of Gibraltar
demonstrated their opposition to the negotiations
by voting overwhelmingly in a referendum to
remain British. But the previous Anglo-Spanish
agreement in principle to share sovereignty is still
on the table. We are totally opposed to that
agreement in principle. Sovereignty shared is
sovereignty surrendered. We will not surrender
British sovereignty.
An incoming Conservative Government will not be
bound by any agreement to surrender Gibraltar’s
sovereignty which has been reached without the
consent of the people of Gibraltar. We will disown
this Government’s agreement in principle to share
sovereignty with Spain.
We believe that Britain and Spain should now
discuss those matters where agreement can be
reached. They do not include the issue of
sovereignty. They should be confined to such
issues as better communications, transport links,
improved trading relations and improved cooperation
on infrastructure projects, for example
improvements to Gibraltar’s airport which will be of
benefit to both Spain and Gibraltar.

"After 12 months of negotiation, we and Spain are in broad agreement on many of the principles that should underpin a lasting settlement. They include the principles that Britain and Spain should share sovereignty over Gibraltar."
